The story behind the pattern.
I wanted to do a octagon that didn’t have much chain space between the stitches, so it covers for example an old pillow with a pattern on the frontside and if you want to do a bag without lining. I ended up with a square but also a octagon if you stop crocheting before the last four rounds.
Introduction
I have divided the The Blossom Medallion square pattern in to four parts, such as the flower in the middle (Center r.1-10), the colorful octagon around the flower (Inner frame r.11-15), the more discrete octagon (Outer frame r. 16-21) and if you want to do the octagon in to a square (corners r. 22-25). The stitches in the pictures are the stitches I crocheted (not what they count as).

Alternatives
The pattern below can be adjusted, depending on your own preferences. For example:
- The initial ch on round 1 can be made with a magic ring.
- You can start each round with a standing stitch wherever possible, instead of ch.
- You can end rounds with either an invisible join or with a sl st.
- I prefer to weave in the ends after each round, for best result. You can choose to do that after finishing all rounds as well.
