Bill of materials
Yarn – Infinity Hearts Rose 4/8 (50 g = 176 m)
- 1 ball – green, color 163 – 14 g used
- 1 ball – pink, color 33 – 5 g used
- 1 ball – yellow, color 179 – 5 g used
Felt balls
- 1 package, 20 mm, 30 pieces – springcolors – used 7 green, 2 orange, 2 mustard yellow, 1 yellow and 1 pink.
Sequins
- 1 package, 6 mm, round – old pink – used a bunch.
- 1 package, 6 mm, round – yellow – used a bunch.

The story behind the pattern
I came up with this pincushion pattern when I was blocking one of my project. I dug into a jar full of pins and stuck my fingers. I have had some pincushions before but no one full with flowers handmade by myself. When I did the first one I was so eager to get it finished that I didn’t make a pattern. Now when I made another Fancy flower pincushion I made a pattern at the same time! Woho!!

Introduction
The pincushion consist of several parts, such as the base plate, the center piece (a big felt ball flower), surrounding flowers and the handle (a loop). To make it easy to follow the pattern, I have also divided the instruction for each one of these parts into separate sections below.

Base plate
Round plastic plate
Make a round plate of hard plastic. It stops the needles from going through the bottom of the pincushion.
Material / craft tools: wine glass, plastic lid, pen and scissor.
1. Start with the wine glass. Turn it upside down on the plastic lid (make sure it is empty first ;)). You can easy check if the glass is big enough for 7 felted balls 0.78 inches (20 mm) , by placing the glass over the felted balls.
2. Draw around the glass to make a circle, diameter 2.56 inches (6.5 cm).
3. Cut the circle out of the plastic lid.
Crocheted circles
Crochet two circles according to r.1 – r.4 (see below). They should be as large as the round plastic plate because the round plastic plate will be crocheted in between them.
Material / craft tools: Yarn (green color no. 163) and crochet hook 2.5 mm
1 Ch 4 (= ch 1, 1 dc), 11 dc in the first ch.
Tighten the ring by pulling the short yarn thread. Finish with 1 sl st in the first dc.
(Total 1 ch, 12 dc)
2 *«2 dc» (= ch 3, 1 dc in first repetition) in each stitch* 12 times.
Finish with 1 sl st in the first dc.
(Total 24 dc)
3 *1 dc (= ch 3 in first repetition), «2 dc» in next stitch* 12 times.
Finish with 1 sl st in the first dc.
(Total 36 dc)
4 *2 dc (= ch 3, 1 dc in first repetition), «2 dc» in next stitch* 12 times.
Finish with 1 sl st in the first dc.
(Total 48 dc)
Crochet circle number two by repeat the rounds 1 – 4.
Attach threads that will no longer be used. Don’t cut the yarn thread you crocheted with on the second circle, continue with it in round 5.
Assembling base plate
When you have crocheted two circles, it is time to crochet them together with your round plastic plate in the middle of them.
5 Place the two crocheted circles with the downside facing each other. Work them together with sc in BLO. Crochet the circles together to half, then insert the round plastic plate between them and then continue to crochet the two circles together completely.
Finish with 1 sl st in the first sc.
(Total 48 sc BLO)
Crochet leaves around base plate
When the circles is completely closed with sc in BLO it’s time to start crocheting the leaves that should be around the base plate . (r.6 – r.9)
Material / craft tools: Yarn (continue with the same color as r.1 – r.5) and crochet hook 2.5 mm.
6 *1 sc (= ch 1 in first repetition), «2 hdc», «1 hdc, 1 dc», «1 dc, 1 hdc», «2 hdc», 1 sc* 8 times.
Finish with 1 sl st in the first sc. (Total 16 sc, 48 hdc, 16 dc)
7 *1 sc (= ch 1 in first repetition), 2 hdc, 1 dc, «2 dc», «2 dc», 1 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc* 8 times.
Finish with 1 sl st in the first sc. (Total 16 sc, 32 hdc, 48 dc)
8 Repeat r.6, but in FLO on r.4.
It doesn’t matter which side you do it on. Make sure you start the round so that the leaves you make now end up opposite the leaves you made on r.6, they will be crocheted together later.
9 Repeat r.7. When you are done with r.9 you have two layers of leaves around the base plate, they will be crocheted together at the end when you are almost done with the pincushion. (r.10)
Big felt ball flower
Make a big flower with felt balls
Sew seven felt balls together to a big flower with 1 felt ball in the middle and six felted balls around it.
Material / craft tools: 7 felt balls, curved quilting needle, sewing thread and scissor.
- Start sewing through the felt ball that should be in the middle, no. 1 and continue obliquely through the second felt ball, no. 2 that should be in the felt ball circle around no.1.
- Continue through felt ball no. 3 and into felt ball no. 1 in the middle again.
- It’s time for felt ball, no. 4 that I put on the other side of felt ball, no. 2. Sew through felt ball no. 4, no. 2 and center no. 1
- Put felt ball no. 5 next to felt ball no. 4, sew through felt ball no. 5, no. 4 and center no. 1.
- Put felt ball no. 6 next to felt ball no. 5, sew through felt ball no. 6, no. 5 and center no. 1.
- Put felt ball no. 7 next to felt ball no. 6, sew through felt ball no. 7, no. 6 and center no. 1.
- Sew through felt ball no. 3 and center no. 1.
If the big felt ball flower feels a little loose, you can always sew a little extra through it.
Attach the thread to the bottom of the big felt ball flower.
Assembling the big felt ball flower on the base plate
Now it’s time to sew the big felt ball flower on to the round base plate.
Material / craft tools: Sewing needle, thread and scissor.
- Sew through felt ball no. 1(the one in the middle) on the big felt ball flower continue sewing down in the middle of the crochet base plate, the needle should reappear at crocheted r.3.
2. Sew through a felt ball on the big felt ball flower a little further down the middle and then down into the crocheted bottom between two felt balls, repeat the first two steps until all the felt balls are attached. Try to follow the line made by r.3 so the big felt ball flower falls in place in the middle of the base plate.
3. Once you have sewn the big felt ball flower into the bottom properly it is time to attach the thread. You can do this between the two layers of leaves which will be crocheted together later.
Small flowers
Crochet small flower petals
Make six flowers out of crocheted petals and felt balls.
Material / craft tools: Yarn and crochet hook 2.5 mm.
I crocheted 3 petals in pink (color 33) and 3 petals in yellow (color 179).
1 Ch 4 (= ch 1, 1 dc), 11 dc in the first ch. Tighten the ring by pulling the short yarn thread. Finish with 1 sl st in the first dc. (Total 1 ch, 12 dc)
2 *1 sc (= ch 1 in first repetition), «5 dc», 1 sc* 4 times. (Total 8 sc, 20 dc)
3 *1 sl st, 1 sc, 1 hdc, «1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc», 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sl st* 4 times. Finish with 1 sl st in the first sc. (Total 8 sl st, 8 sc, 8 hdc, 16 dc, 8 tr)
Save a longer thread when cutting the yarn, the thread is used to sew the crocheted petals in the felt ball to be attached in the middle of the flower
Assembling crocheted flower petal on a felt ball
Material / craft tools: Larger needle with sharp tip and scissor.
1.Place the felt ball in the center of the petals. Sew through the petal space in between and through the felt ball a few times back and forth until all four spaces between the petals are stuck in the felt ball.
2. Attach the threads to the back of the small flower.
The end result, front and back.
You need six small flowers for the pincushion.
Assembling small flowers on the big felt ball flower
Sew six small flowers on to the big felt ball flower.
Material / craft tools: Sewing thread, sewing needle and scissor.
- Put out your six small flowers around the big felt ball flower. Then you can decide in which order you want to sew them on.
- Start by sewing through a felt ball on the big felt ball flower and then through the back of a small flower,
and then through a felt ball on the big felt ball flower, continue until all the small flowers are in place. Attach the thread in between the two layers of leaves on the base plate which will be crocheted together later.
Sew sequins and petals
Material / craft tools: Sequins, sewing thread and scissor.
- Sew the petals together that are upwards on the small flowers and sit next to each other. At the same time you sew the sequins. If you don’t want sequins, it may be nice to sew the petals of the small flowers together anyway. This will make the petals more fixed in place.
- I attached the petals which are downwards with some stitches in the base plate. You can also attach sequins at the same time. When you have finished sewing, attach the thread in between the two layers of leaves on the base plate which will be crocheted together at the end.
Make a loop

Now we continue to crochet on to the base plate leaves
Material / craft tools: Yarn (continue with the same color as r.1 – r.9) and crochet hook 2.5 mm.
Insert all the threads that you have attached and crochet them in between the leaves.
10 Start in a sc BLO in the beginning of two leaves. Crochet the leaves together with each other.
*6 sc BLO (=ch 1, 5 sc in first repetition), ch 2, 6 sc BLO* 7 times,
the last leaf are made with a loop. 6 sc BLO, ch 30, 1 sc BLO, crochet 30 sc in each and one of the 30 ch, 1 sc in the stitch made before the 30 sc, 5 sc BLO. Finish with 1 sl st in the first sc.
(Total, 44 ch, 126 sc)
Attach all threads! Now you’re done with your Fancy flower pincushion!
